Annual growth layers in tooth cementum can help estimate an animal’s age. Researchers use these age estimates to understand wildlife populations and inform conservation decisions.

One Health Medical Technologies leads AI model development in a collaboration with Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Wildlife Analytics Lab and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Wildlife Forensics and Fish Health Lab.

The initial focus is mule deer. The team is digitizing archived samples and developing machine-learning models to support image-based age estimation, with the aim of improving the efficiency and consistency of tooth aging.
